Formerly known as Karaova, Mumcular it is famous for tobacco, honey and olive production & has a population of approximately 15,000. Also famous for its hand-made carpets, people in the area have recently focused more on carpet production. The process is carried out mostly by women, who do everything from sheep shearing, wool spinning, dyeing the wool with natural dyes, through to weaving. The majority of the finished rugs are transported to Istanbul and Izmir to be exported. The villagers dry the carpets in the sun and sometimes whole hill sides are covered with carpets. Tours from Bodrum to Mumcular area are organised to see the art of carpet weaving and the village way of life.

Mumcular is just 8kms from the coast & the little village of Guvercinlik. Dolmus (Turkish buses) depart from Mumcular every 15 minutes or so, so it is easy to get wherever you want without the need to hire a car.. Destinations are clearly displayed on each vehicle and all you have to do is wave for the driver to stop. The trip to Bodrum 2.5 Lira (approximately £1) & the journey to the sea & next nearest town, Guvercinlik, costs just 1 Lira (approximately 40 pence).
Guvercinlik
Guvercinlik, is the first bay you will encounter on your journey from the airport being 20 km from the town of Bodrum itself. This is the first settlement before Bodrum. Its enclosed sea is like a lake. Off the shore there is Salih Island. The town is slowly being developed and has great potential. There is an internet cafe & some nice restaurants in the harbour.
Bodrum Property - Guvercinlik Restaurant
Guvercinlik is surrounded with small hotels, restaurants and houses. There are some five-star holiday villages in the cove for those who prefer to be away from the village centre. The hills to the east of the wide and tall Salih Island are covered in pines and lower parts in olive trees.
Bodrum Property - Guvercinlik Harbour
The sea is still very clean despite the pollution created by the fish farms nearby. In the south there is another holiday area consisting of seven or eight villas. Although it is claimed that the island of Salih was the location of Old Karyanda there are almost no historic remains to prove that. The Karyanda locals left the island and were re-located around Türkbükü-Gölköy and founded New Karyanda.
Bodrum
If you prefer a livelier atmosphere, the fantastic town of Bodrum awaits you.
